Book Review: THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN by Paula Hawkins

Several months ago I read You by Caroline Kepnes, which was engrossing, but all the characters were horrible people and I couldn’t give a whit what happened to them. When they encountered very bad things, all I could do was shrug.

The sleeve is very cool and I also think the title on the cover printed in such a way that it felt as though I was reading it on the side of a passing train is very clever indeed.

The debate over whether or not to keep reading a book when all the characters are unlikable has come up a lot for me over the last couple of years (maybe longer). Personally, if there’s no one I can relate to or understand on any level by page 50 or so, I will let go of the book and move on to the next. Occasionally, a really strong plot has kept me reading, but it’s rare. I enjoy reading and I must not have my time wasted when I find the time to read. I feel the same way about film and television.

Note: this is why I keep coming back to you, PCN. You have never steered me toward a book or film or program that wasted my time.

Wow. Thanks, Eirego, for your vote of confidence in my opinion.

At least we’re in good company on “Didn’t Dig Girl On A Train Island,” E!

That island is so very small.

I know, I could hear you snoring from the opposite shore.

What a great review of this book! One thing I don’t think you mentioned is how overhyped this book is. It kept my attention, so I did read the whole thing. But it isn’t nearly what all the hype insists that it is.

Even though I only posted this recently, I wrote it a while ago before it got all the hype. Despite my feelings, I think any book that can get people reading and talking about it is a good thing.

Thanks for the nice comment about my review!

I’m finding this book painfully tedious, and I’m not sure I’ll get through it. Also reading The Cuckoo’s Calling and preferring it.

Let me know what you think of CUCKOO’S when you’re done. Here are my thoughts on it.

You are so much kinder in your review than I could ever be about this book (Girl On a Train). I hated it – can’t recall the last time I was so happy to finish a book (which I only did because my book club was talking about adding this one to the list and I want to know what I’m talking about when I beg them not to).

The keyboard was beginning to smolder, but I deleted most of my comments about the book before clicking on ‘Post Comment.’ The last bestseller I loathed this much was probably James Patterson’s ‘First To Die.’
