It’s something very sad that the conventional image of Asians (and Hispanics, if I can add my experience) has lasted this long in the entertainment and film industry. The typecasting you and others have had to put up with, just to ‘not confuse’ a certain portion of the market, is its own dinosaur of an argument. It’s outlived its time. I’m not so sure it isn’t expectation meeting–making different non-white people less threatening to their status quo of middle America.
Guess what? That’s changing, and it’s Hollywood that’s lagging behind the times. The faces of Asians and HIspanics are what’s rising, along with their involvement in this country, and it’ll be their tastes and expectations that Hollywood will have to adjust to (not the other way around). Hopefully soon, it’ll be your knowledge, education and experience (and how it applies/spans the growing cultural mix here) that will be sought after. I have no doubt you have the drive and talent to succeed, Elyse. Thanks for sharing this with me.
