We both liked it. I wasn’t WOW’d, but the humor made the story more enjoyable for me. (Rooster’s assessment of La Boeuf’s mouth injury just screamed Coen Bros to me. Funny, but I had to look away. ;p) And you’re so right about Hailee Steinfeld holding her own. I’d add my own recommendation for this film.

**Spoiler**

Little Blackie’s fate and how Rooster got him to continue was really hard for me watch and brought a few tears.

She teared up when she saw her father’s belongings in the boarding house. She was aghast at the deaths of the two men inside the cabin and had compassion on the younger man and wanted him buried, as they promised. And I think she was certainly upset over Little Blackie at the end. At first she begged Rooster to stop and later, when the horse collapsed and Rooster shot him, she cried very hard and beat Rooster with all her waning strength. I honestly don’t see how you can say she “remained placid throughout”.

I’ve been so wary because I’m a huge John Wayne fan. True Grit is actually my least favorite of his movies.

I’m just irritated because so few westerns come out each year, and I wish there had been an original or a remake of a true western. I don’t really consider True Grit a western.

Anyway, I’m really interested to see this version. Thanks for a great review, as usual.

Maybe I’ll watch the original before going to see the remake. Thanks for this, Eric and PCN!

Thanks for letting me know this won’t be a waste of time over the holidays.

I’m even more anxious to see this. Thanks, guys.

I was wary when I saw the Coen brothers were directing because I figured I haven’t been into the last couple of projects they put their hands on, but this sounds good. An edgier True Grit? Count me in.
