This is true. I do lament a lost love. In my case, he died. His name was Terry. I’m married now, 30 years later, and I love my husband. But I still think about Terry and miss him.

Of the last ten women I’ve seriously dated, eight found their “true love” right after dating me. Alas, I was never the “true love.” Two of those women I thought, and still think might have been my true love but the feeling wasn’t mutual. I’m not sure if that counts as “true love.”
Do I lament those two, yes. Do I lay in bed and think about what might have been, yes. Do I lay and bed and think, how can I use these feelings to make my characters more emotionally rich, yes definitely.

I was sitting in a restaurant lounge area in New Orleans waiting for John’s business meeting to wrap up. A man approached and offered to buy me a drink; I declined, politely. After he left the area, the bartender asked “Do you know who that was?” I indicated that I was not paying much attention, so no, I did not know who it was. He told me it was Paul McCartney….DAMN! I always wanted to marry him.

Not so much a lost love–one usually knows why those didn’t work out–as much as, to quote Eagles, “I was thinking ’bout a woman who might have/Loved me and I never knew.” High school, she awkwardly asked me to a school dance, and I didn’t even realize I was being asked out, never answered her. Life still worked out just fine, but still …
