Man, tonight’s results show was so boring, I barely stayed awake long enough to see who got voted off, much less write this. Why won’t they cut it down to a half hour already? There’s SO much filler, it’s annoying. Why was Taylor Hicks performing his honky tonk music when this is standards week? Natalie Cole made sense, but Jamie Foxx singing in an electronic voice that sounded like some guy who’s kidnapped your kid and calling for ransom? I’m so confused.
There was one moment that made my eyes pop open: Adam being in the bottom two while Allison was safe. I’m glad for Allison and am not a huge fan of Adam but based on his viral popularity and pre-ordained victory by some people, I was surprised. Kris being in the bottom 3 was unexpected, too. He’s got a huge fan club, evidenced by iTunes downloads and screaming girls in the audience every week, plus he did well last night so I don’t know what happened.
But I do know Matt finally ended his run tonight, which is NOT the least bit surprising, considering he’s been on borrowed time for weeks now. The fat is now trimmed and the top 4 is as it should be. From now until the finale in 3 weeks, it should be a fierce fight for the crown.
Are you happy with the remaining contestants? Who are you rooting for? Have you changed allegiance in the last few weeks?

April 30, 2009 at 2:11 pmI haven’t actually seen the result show yet, but I did fall on my back when I read about the bottom 3.
I’ve been thinking heavily on what might be going on, and while doing that I’ve surfed the forums & web to see what happened. And it seems clear to me.
First of all, Matt’s case wasn’t a surprise. He didn’t build enough momentum to beat the others. I do think it was his time (he was actually VERY lucky, since he was given the opportunity three times).
There’s a generalized opinion that the bottom 3 were fixed by the producers to promote voting, but I think it was all natural.
I think Allison & Danny got most of the “I-vote-for-the-best-of-the-night” votes, at least thanks to Kara’s (in the case of Allison) and Paula’s (for Danny) speeches for their performances.
Allison might have inherited some of Lil’s regular voters, and maybe Danny inherited Anoop’s.
Kris opened the show, so he had a clear disadvantage against the others. And it clearly hurt him. His performance was very good, though maybe not as good as Allison’s or Adam’s.
And the thing about Adam is (first) that opinions about him are quite polarized: most people vote for him or don’t. He’s got a strong fan-base, but I don’t think it will grow that much -specially with very conservative people. And second, most people might have thought that he was clearly safe, so they spent most of their usual-Adam-votes for someone else who they wanted to be safe, specially Allison who’s been on the tough spot many times.
And another thing is that I see most of Adam & Kris’s fan’s are Kradam fans, so they split their votes for the two of them. Few people are falling -as of now- for the early judges’ prediction (and I think also producers’ hopes) for the “light vs. dark” (Danny vs. Adam) finale and are instead voting for an Adam-Allison-Kris top 3.
What I think is that whether it was a producers’ plot, a voting catastrophe, or the result of last night show, Kris and Adam might have benefited from being in the bottom. Their fans will be voting like crazy from now on just to save them, at least next week.
I think Danny might be in trouble, because what he accomplished this week may fall to pieces if he doesn’t give another great performance. He’s lost a lot of his initial momentum, and being safe this week beside the “near-elimination” of Kradam was just an illusion.
But we’ll see next week. Won’t we?

April 30, 2009 at 2:14 pmWhat I missed is that I got the same feeling about this bottom 3 that when Michael Johns -or even Carly Smithson or Melinda Doolittle- got eliminated… People thought they were safe… but they weren’t…

Thank you for the in-depth analysis. You have really given this some thought!
I must say it annoys me when people say the producers fixed the results on Idol. I think they would get in legal trouble if they did that. Many years ago, when the quiz show scandals erupted over the outcome being fixed, laws were created to prevent this from happening and producers take it very seriously (I know people who work on reality and game shows). The judges can say whatever they want to try and influence voters but producers can’t actually go in and just change results. So I think it’s probably like you said—people assuming Kris and Adam were safe and voting for others.

May 3, 2009 at 9:35 amI left the show a while ago and now only half watch it. There’s only mild curiosity for me because I can’t get Jesse Langseth out of my head.

May 4, 2009 at 9:32 amHey, fellow Langseth fans! I loved that girl! I hope we see more of her, too, because she was smokin’ hot and had a really sultry, husky voice.
