I can’t take any more of these iconic people dying this summer. Twenty-plus summers ago, I was going through adolescence with Hughes’s movies as a backdrop to it all.
When I was in college, I DJ’d at a local radio station and played that Simple Minds song from The Breakfast Club, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” ad nauseum because it was the hit of the day. It seems apropos now to put it on again because we won’t forget about Hughes any time soon.
Thanks for all the laughs and making awkwardness cool.

August 6, 2009 at 5:51 pmI was well past adolescence when Hughes’ films came out, but they helped me remember that time and also to better understand some of the cultural changes between my generation and the next. I sometimes think his brand of comedy has been crowded out by the inane (e.g. Dumb and Dumber et al) and the plethora of special effects films that now dominate the American market.

August 6, 2009 at 6:47 pmThough I’m from an older generation, I discovered the John Hughes’ brand of coming of age comedy was still very reachable. JH’s movie themes remain universal. It’s too bad he left this world so soon. May he rest in peace.

August 7, 2009 at 2:05 amI agree. That’s sad. And here in Mexico, Beto el Boticario died too! He was one of the funniest guys on T.V.
It does seem like one of those years.
