By now, you’ve probably heard about the winners from the 62nd Cannes film festival. Austrian director/writer Michael Haneke won the Palme d’Or for his black and white movie, The White Ribbon, which explores strange events taking place in a rural German village right before the start of World War I.
Christoph Waltz won Best Actor for his portrayal of the Nazi “Jew Hunter” in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg won Best Actress for playing a bereaved mother in Lars von Trier’s controversial Antichrist.
For more official festival winners, click here for Variety‘s round-up. To see who won my Nerdes d’Or for Best Dressed, read on.
Shortly after Robin Wright Penn appeared at at the Up premiere looking fabulous in this Elie Saab gown, her divorce from Sean Penn was called off. Coincidence?
Not only is the color stunning, look at the fit of this gown on Michelle Yeoh‘s body. Perfection.
Continuing the beautiful color trend is this pink column gown on Shu Qi, one of the festival’s judges. Love the necklace, too.
How fabulous does Elizabeth Banks look in this Armani Prive´gown? If I looked that good, my smile would be that big, too.
I have no love for Devon Aoki‘s acting but she looks like royalty in yellow Roberto Cavalli at a Chopard party.
I’m not a fan of beige (I read somewhere this was actually rose-colored) but the way this Versace drapes over Angelina Jolie‘s body is magnificent. It looks soft, comfy and sexy as hell. Love the siren-red lipstick, too.
Brad Pitt’s Inglorious Basterds co-star, Diane Kruger (in Marchesa), gave Angelina fierce competition for most radiant woman at the premiere.
I usually find metallics boring but Zhang Ziyi looks the sexiest I’ve ever seen her look in this gown. Yowza!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks like Venus rising out of her clamshell in this seafoam blue gown.
Roberto Cavalli seems to be MVP at this year’s festival, designing so many of my favorite gowns, including this one on Shu Qi. Love the rich blue hue, asymmetry and leather belt details.
Devon Aiki again, this time in lilac Alberta Ferretti, but once again with impeccable hair and Chopard jewelry. Aoki should stop venturing into acting and stay a model because she sure knows how to wear clothes.
Finally, I have to give a shout out to Tilda Swinton, who looks stunning in this burgundy ensemble. Her style is so unique that her outfits usually leave me confused but in this, she is awe-inspiring in the best way.
What do you think? Which ones are your faves?

May 26, 2009 at 9:19 pmThanks for the Cannes update. Wish I could have made the trip this year, but there’s that whole economy thing here in the US.
Always appreciate classy women looking hot! Although I have no idea why David Bowie is wearing a dress….oh, wait a minute, that’s Tilda Swinton? LOL!

May 26, 2009 at 11:31 pmLOL, EireGo!
PCN, I especially love your description: “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks like Venus rising out of her clamshell in this seafoam blue gown.” She does!
I love all of these except {I’m almost scared to say it} Angelina’s. As sensational as her physique is, I’m not a fan of the side slit up to the whatsy. But I’m guessing men may possibly disagree.

May 27, 2009 at 10:55 amWow! Gorgeous women in stunning outfits! Thanks for the smiles, PCN.
It’s enough to make me switch teams.

May 27, 2009 at 11:57 amAishwarya Rai Bachchan’s got my vote. She’s…I’m…whoa, it’s getting hot in here.

May 27, 2009 at 5:11 pmI thought I would read more about the movies and less about the dresses, but I realize I already know everything about the winners whereas I had missed some of these fabulous outfits!
Thanks PCN, great job!!! 🙂
You definitely chose great pictures!
Diane Kruger looks amazing, Tilda Swinton is so classy and I’ve been a long time admirer of beautiful and talented Robin Wright! Give her some old jeans and a dirty shirt and she still looks gorgeous!
I was wondering: do you know the French actress Isabelle Huppert in the US?
She was the head of the jury who awarded the “Palme d’or” to Michael Haneke, the very same one who enabled her to win Best Actress in Cannes 8 years ago for “La pianiste”.
And she’s one of our most talented subtle and clever actresses!
(Tell me if I’m being excessively chauvinistic with my references to French stars! 😉 )

May 27, 2009 at 6:24 pmNo problem with me having French stars on a pedestal, Julien. Alot of U.S. stars are looking a bit rough around the edges anyway. Love the Euro-look.
PS: Everyone knows Isabelle Huppert here. She’s great.

May 27, 2009 at 6:41 pmBy the time I got my post up yesterday (I took a break from writing during the 3-day holiday weekend here), I figured everyone—like you, Julien—would already know everything about the movies and winners at Cannes so I focused on the fabulous fashion.
I do know Isabelle Huppert (most of my family speaks French so we see a lot of French movies) and was dismayed to read this nasty article about her in the Hollywood Reporter. Could you please tell me if the French media are really saying these things about her?
Oh, and I like your promotion of French stars because it helps me learn about actors I may not have heard of. Feel free to plug away!

May 28, 2009 at 3:40 pmHey PCN!
I read the whole article you mentioned and I have to say it is a jumble of mistakes and stupid rumors!…
It is really annoying to see that some people can get so far away from truth and spread their nonsense…
What a shame! 🙁
Here in France (where the Festival was actually held!), Mrs Huppert and the rest of the jury have been acclaimed for a great work by both audience and reviews.
Most papers and TV shows say this Festival was a very good edition, ending with a well-selected prize list.
Even before the prize ceremony, “The white ribbon” was considered as one of the most probable Palme d’Or since its showing had been a very sucessful one. I’m quite sure that any other jury without Isabelle Huppert would have chosen this movie too.
And if “The prophet” had been chosen as the big winner, no doubt that Isabelle Huppert would have been accused to give the most coveted award to a French movie (plus last year’s Palme d’or was already a French film)…
Anyway, this article is full of mistakes and wrong information (Alain Resnais’s movie was very well received, Terry Gilliam’s movie could not win anything since it was not part of the official selection, etc.)!
I’m not being chauvinistic but realistic about all this, so trust me: don’t trust anything this trashy article says! 😉
And keep on watching French movies, I’m so glad you do that! 😉
(Plus this will help you regain your French!)

May 29, 2009 at 12:03 pmThanks for straightening all that out, Julien. When I read the article, I kept looking for facts but it all sounded like innuendo and rumors so I thought, “I’m going to ask Julien for the real story over there!”
And yes, I will continue to watch French films. You know who my very first movie star crush was when I was little? Alain Delon!
Julien
May 30, 2009 at 5:28 amI’m glad I could clear this up for you, PCN!
With all your international readers, you can get real information from every spot in the world! Ain’t that cool?! 😉
Alain Delon is not anymore the young beautiful idol he used to be, but he’s definitely a nice reference! Your French culture definitely rocks!!
