Winner of IN THE WOODS + Another Giveaway!

My randomly selected winner for a paperback copy of Tana French’s In the Woods is:

  • Paulette

Congrats! Please hit the contact button and let me know where I should send it. If I don’t hear from you by 7 p.m. Friday, August 6, I’ll choose another winner.

If you didn’t win, don’t despair because I’ve got another giveaway starting…now!

Thanks to Dana at Kaye Publicity, I get to give away THREE free copies of Marcus Sakey‘s recently released e-anthology called Scar Tissue: Seven Stories of Love and Wounds. Marcus is the accomplished author of four novels, three of which have been sold to Hollywood. Scar Tissue is a collection of his previously published short stories, a great way to sample his work if you haven’t already done so.

Here’s the product description:

Marcus Sakey has been called “the new reigning prince of crime fiction,” (Chicago Tribune) and “exactly the electric jolt American crime fiction needs” (Dennis Lehane). Now from the bestselling author of The Blade Itself and Good People comes an anthology of seven short stories:

* “The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away” (nominated for Thriller and Macavity awards)
* “The Days When You Were Anything Else”
* “No One”
* “Gravity and Need”
* “As Breathing”
* “Cobalt”
* “The Time Before the Last”

These stories of men and women pushed to—and beyond—the ragged edge demonstrate why National Public Radio declared Sakey writes “crime drama for the 21st century.” Includes excerpts of Sakey’s previously published novels, as well as an exclusive teaser of his next book, coming June 2011.

Sound good? You know you want it. Before I get to the giveaway rules, I want to reiterate this is an e-book. If you win, you’ll get a code for a free download. You don’t have to own an e-reader; the anthology can be downloaded onto your computer as a PDF file.

To enter:

  • be a subscriber or Twitter follower (tell me which if you’ve never left a comment before)
  • leave a comment telling me about a favorite scar of yours or someone else’s if you don’t have one (mine is on my right middle finger from being sliced by a razor blade used by someone cutting my hair)

That’s it. This is open to international readers!

Giveaway ends next Tuesday, August 10, 5 p.m. PST. Three winners will be randomly chosen via Random.org and only announced here and on Twitter. I won’t contact you personally so please check back to see if you win. Winners will have 48 hours to claim the prize before alternate name(s) are chosen.

Now, show me your badass scars!

    My only scar is on my leg. I was riding on a motorcycle in back as a passenger while wearing shorts and my leg came into contact with the muffler. Yow!

    I want Marcus’s Scar Tissue!

    I have Marcus’s Scar Tissue (and am actually reviewing it today), so you don’t need to enter me. But I will add that it’s FABULOUS and everyone should read it!

    Melody, when I was in high school, I was with my best friend and her boyfriend who had restored some kind of old muscle car. He had chrome exhast pipes that went down each side of the car and I got out of the car and had my leg against it. It was so hot I didn’t even realize I was burning my skin, so I didn’t pull my leg away immediately. I know that sounds weird, but that’s what happened. I had a horrible scar from that for years. It’s pretty well gone, now, though.

    However, I do still lay claim to the scar on my arm from where I shattered my wrist and they had to put pins in my arm and my hand to immobilize my wrist while it healed. I never thought much about it until Gregg Hurwitz told me it was a cool scar. Now I cherish it! LOL

    High on my left shoulder I have a 3-and-a-half inch long scar. When I was 15 my church youth group was having a picnic at someone’s farm. We were playing a game called “setback”. I don’t remember the rules except that it involved throwing and catching a football. I was running to catch the ball, watching it over my shoulder. I was wondering why everyone was yelling “Fence! Fence!” when I ran full-speed into a barbed wire fence.

    In retrospect, the ensuing wound probably needed stitches, but a little first aid and a bunch of Band-Aids and I was back in the game.

    I call it my “fencing scar”.

    The left side of my chest where my heart is: 3rd grade, Shelly Brailey and I were very much in love. Then my family had to move and we cried our eyes out, me from the family car as it pulled away and Shelly from the curb while her parents held her hand. 2 weeks later, my family came back to visit. I rushed over to Shelly’s house and found her on the swing set holding hands with my arch enemy, Todd. You may not be able to see the scar, but trust me, it is still there.

    (Twitter follower here 🙂

    I have two scars I love…favorite is right across my neck. Got it having thyroid surgery, but I’ve spent years making up scintillating stories about its origin for those who do a double take (most end with, “…and then I escaped, but you should see the other guy!”).

    The other is a little one on my knee, from when I was cutting wrapping paper as a kid and the knee got in the path of scissors on a mission. That one always reminds me of happy times with family 🙂

    MelodyGirl—Yikes. I’ll remember to wear the thickest jeans I own the next time I ride a bike, maybe even throw on leg warmers for extra protection.

    Jen—Oh, my leg hurt just reading your story. And then my wrist started twitching. You are badass!

    (Folks, head over to Jen’s blog to read a review of this anthology and other cool Marcus-centric things she has planned for this weekend.)

    Eddy—I’m still cringing from your spores-in-the-face story and this one made me go “ouch!” Can’t wait to see what other stories you’ve got up your sleeve.

    EIREGO—Awww. I’ve got a few of those internal heart scars, too.

    Erin—You are also badass! That’s what I do, too—make up stories about my scars instead of trying to hide them.

    I was 14 had showed up early for soccer practice. One of the rich kids on our team was there showing off the shiny new moped he got for his birthday. He wasn’t being a creep about it or anything and even allowed us each a spin around the field on it. I had never been on one before. Hell, I didn’t have a bicycle, so I hopped right on when it came my turn. I made it halfway around the field before realizing how wet the grass was and how easily the new tires on the moped would slide. Like an idiot, I was giving it full throttle when I came to my first turn. The bike started to slide and before I could control it, I drove into and up the chain link fence surrounding the practice field. My left leg got caught on the top of the fence and the bike fell back to earth, leaving me hanging upside down. I have a neat little scar on the inner side of my left knee in the shape of the Nike symbol.

    Hooray! An international competition, and for something I’d really love to read. Doing my happy dance! If the winners are chosen randomly, I have some hope. If it’s based on comparing our scars, I can’t compete with these tales ~ but here goes. Two ~ oh, wait ~ three of my scars come from being naughty, so perhaps account for my current law-abiding nature. One came from falling while climbing down from the top of my wardrobe, where I had a kind of nest for reading {frowned upon by those who generally know better, aka parents}. On the way down, I grabbed at the wardrobe in a last ditch effort to break the fall, and cut my wrist on the top cracked corner of the mirror. No stitches, but a nice little ‘character mark’ still lingers on!

      I like the idea of nest for reading on top of the wardrobe, Shell. Any chance you were inspired by THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA? 😉

    Hmmm, no real badass scars to beat some of the competition mentioned above. Best I can do is lots of little pinprick scars and a few scratch scars on my arms from working in a veterinarian’s office for 10 years. I guess that was one bonus to having one of those nice white Midwestern complexions…the scars didn’t show up that much. ;-p

    Reader#9—After MelodyGirl’s, Jen’s and your stories, I’m going to say most accidents do NOT happen inside the home…

    Shell—…then again, maybe they do. I also love your secret nest above the wardrobe and the fact you’re eligible for this giveaway!

    Christine—Animal scars are definitely badass. I mean, you could’ve been turned into a werewolf!
