Because we’re at the weekend and it’s time to party, I’m giving away another free book. Woo-hoo! Loverboy’s got nuthin’ on me. (Yes, I know that’s an ancient reference to a cheesy ’80s band. Your point is?)
Today’s title is John Le Carré‘s latest, Our Kind of Traitor, being released Oct. 12 by Viking. Thanks to the generous folks there, I have one copy to give away. I haven’t read this one yet but it’s been getting rave reviews, including starred ones from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus. From the product description:
Perry and Gail are idealistic and very much in love when they splurge on a tennis vacation at a posh beach resort in Antigua. But the charm begins to pall when a big-time Russian money launderer enlists their help to defect. In exchange for amnesty, Dima is ready to rat out his vory (Russian criminal brotherhood) compatriots and expose corruption throughout the so-called legitimate financial and political worlds. Soon, the guileless couple find themselves pawns in a deadly endgame whose outcome will be determined by the victor of the British Secret Service’s ruthless internecine battles.
Who wants it? You know any novel that contains internecine battles has to be good.

My older brother used to steal my paper route money when I was a kid. Does that count? He also told this girl I was seeing at the time that I was writing love letters to another girl on the other side of the state. It was wrong for me to do that, but WHAT ABOUT THE GUY CODE?!?!
We have since then resolved our issues and are really close.

October 8, 2010 at 4:42 pmWell….the last time I was at a posh beach resort in Antigua, the two-timing, double-crossing, cheating, lying SCUBA instructor…..
The only betrayal that comes to mind is my starter husband who was considerably “less married” than I. However, I did steal my brother’s proof sets from his coin collection and purchase treats for the neighborhood from the ice cream truck!

October 11, 2010 at 8:49 pmHmm. Let me go into my veerrrrry youthful betrayals bag to pick a suitable and G-rated version out (the more mature ones would not be appropriate without being laced with multiple swear words by me). I believe that the one example that fits (your Loverboy ’80s reference reminds me) is when I was in the 4th grade and my supposed “friend” told my crush that every time I hear Cyndi Lauper’s song “True Colors,” I thought of him. My supposed “crush” began to walk around humming and singing that song whilst around me. The shame. The utter shame of my supposed “friend,” spilling my secrets at such an age, but actually adding a lie to it as well — “True Colors” never made me think of him! Still, in my late thirties, I think of this… 🙂
I am an “old” follower and proud of it via my fantastic Google Reader!
