Hearing huge news about two of my favorite mystery series on the same day almost made me pass out from too much joy. The Boston Herald reports that Dennis Lehane, who last year told Entertainment Weekly “it’s highly unlikely” he would ever write another whodunit, much less another Patrick Kenzie/Angie Gennaro book, will be bringing back the Boston P.I.s for another go-round. Not only that, it’s a sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone. If you’ve read the book or seen the movie, you know this case really messed up Patrick and Angie. Can’t wait to see how they’ve handled the fallout and what happens when the case rears its ugly head again.

The other exciting news is that, according to Variety, the Swedish movie version of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (called simply Millenium) will finally get a U.S. release early next year. Lisbeth Salander is one of the most arresting figures in crime fiction today and I imagine she’ll be just as badass on screen.

October 6, 2009 at 6:22 pmMy simple joy for the day is being able to comment here second. 🙂 I’m excited through osmosis ~ have yet to read any Dennis Lehane or {I hang my head} the Stieg Larssons {much as I love dragon tattoos 🙂 }. Maybe I’ll just give in and wait for the movies to come out!

As for The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, I thought Lisbeth would be at least a little more attractive. Maybe that’s the point? I always thought it would be a dumbed down Ellen Page.

Reader#9, Ellen Page would make an excellent Lisbeth. She’s supposed to look like a diminutive teen. Noomi Rapace looks more 20s in this photo but she seems to have the right general vibe/attitude.

October 7, 2009 at 2:20 pmGood news all around. I’m very interested to see what happens with Lehane’s new Patrick and Angie book. He himself commented on how he’s a different writer now. I wonder if people will want the writer he was then…I love the writer he’s become but I’m also a HUGE fan of Shutter Island and I’ve heard so many people say, “I really liked Lehane when he wrong Angie and Patrick but I didn’t like his later stuff.” So, it will be interesting! 🙂

I can’t wait to see Lehane bring that growth to Patrick & Angie, especially since they’re more mature now. I don’t want anybody—the author or his characters—to go back in time.

But, no, I completely agree with you PCN. Being a character junkie, I LOVE to see character development, growth, change. One of the major reasons I’m such a fan of series. A good series should, IMHO, show such things of its characters. It also shows the growth of its author!
