Craisie Spirit

I’ve been AWOL for the past week or so because I was in St. Louis for Bouchercon, the annual world mystery convention during which crime fiction authors and fans mingle, celebrate the genre, drink heavily, and, ah, gain fodder for their novels. A big reason for my desire to go was because Robert Crais would be one of the American guests of honor and a contingent of Craisies (diehard fans of his writing, if you’re new to the term) was gathering to celebrate him. I’ll be sharing other wonderful Bouchercon memories later this week, but today I’m talking Craisies.

Craisies at the LATFOB

In 2001, a group of fans who had become friendly via Crais’s website converged upon the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books to meet each other and spend some time with him. Helen baked cookies, Eddy brought Mardi Gras beads, Sheila gave us Craisie caps, and many wore Hawaiian shirts to represent Elvis Cole’s favorite wardrobe choice.

I remember feeling overwhelmed by the kindness of people I was face to face with for the first time but who were definitely not strangers. I wasn’t surprised, though, because Crais and his writing attract the most generous people. Several became true-blue friends of mine and we have remained in each other’s lives, sharing joy and sadness and all the things between.

At Bouchercon 10 years later

Ten years after that first CraisieCon, a new gang descended upon St. Louis wearing love on its sleeves. Jen at Jen’s Book Thoughts was inspired by Novel-T to come up with the idea of baseball jerseys with names of characters from Crais’s novels. Naomi from Drowning Machine then designed and found a place to make them after we decided on what names we wanted. The breakdown: Jen–Starkey, Michael (le0pard13)–Stone, Naomi–Watrous, Christine–the Cat, Carolyn–Holman, and Paulette–Chenier (her number was double zero). I asked for Dolan but Jen pointed out that she’s dead. I said, “It’s okay. I’m used to being a flash in the pan.”

In the end, the decision was taken out of my hands when Naomi sent me a jersey that said “Cole.” My first reaction was, Wha? I’m not worthy. Then I realized I want to be worthy; the Craisies make me want to be better. Crais has often said he has the best readers in the world. I’m not there yet but about the others, he is spot on.

Great memories, then and now, Elyse. These certainly demonstrate ‘Craisie’ spirit. I just noticed that Naomi is proudly displaying her deltoid arrow in that Bcon11 shot! It is as it should be since she was heavily responsible for those jersey tees. BTW, we received a bunch of great feedback from con attendees (including those who wanted to know where we got them so they could order theirs!). Wonderful post. Thanks.

p.s., I agree with Jen, too

It was fun to see The Boss’s reaction to the shirts! Bob’s too! 😉 I heard a lot of positive feedback from other attendees as well, Micheal. Remember that gal that stopped by our table at dinner? Well done Jen, Naomi and you too, Micheal! Since he was the reason I discovered Elvis & Joe’s world, I got a jersey for Brian…Cole 87.

Elyse, you are the reason I have any Craisie friends at all. It all started with you back when The Two-Minute Rule tour happened. You, Michael, Jen, Christine, Paulette, Carolyn, and of course, THE BOSS himself — you made B’con more fun than I could have hoped.

You all were completely adorable! I loved meeting the Craisies. Can’t believe I thought you were a bowling team, lol.

Laura, you were so wonderful to give Carolyn and me a lift back to the hotel after N@B. You sold at least two books right then!

Hey, I’m in that first picture – I’m the guy in the Kings jersey. That was an amazingly fun event that I FONDLY remember.

Jen—I figured if I wear the jersey for a minimum thirty minutes a day, some of Elvis’s coolness will start rubbing off on me. I can dream. I’m also grateful for the Craisie world that brought us together. The love you send has been boomeranged.

le0pard13—I like how Naomi makes it clear in that pic there’s no messing around with her. Tell her you love Lucy at the risk of death. And it sounds like she should go into the tee-selling business. I’m glad I already have one of these highly coveted jerseys because I think she might price them wayyy out of my range now.

Naomi—The way I remember it, you already knew Michael and Jen (and Corey) and introduced them to me. And I am always right.

Marce—Yes, definitely read his books. You’ll have a heck of a welcoming wagon into the Craisie family.

Jann—Glad I can help bring some of the events to you. Now, if I can just figure out how to stream them as live, 4D experiences.

Laura—If the Craisies were a bowling team, I’d be kicked out for sure. The adult-size ball is half my weight so I sometimes have to play with the kiddie balls. (That sounds extremely inappropriate but you know what I mean.)

Rae—It was wonderful seeing you, even if it was too brief. You helped me appreciate the event even more with the behind-the-scenes peek at all the planning involved.

William—I remember you! Didn’t you go by Bill? Nice to “see” you again.

EIREGO—Don’t be jealous; just jump in. If I recall correctly, you’ve read Crais’s books so you’re all set.

You are the queen of all things Crais, so whatever your ruling, I will abide by it. (Yes, I did just curtsy).

I’d curtsy as well, but I’d probably do a face plant on the hardwood. 😉 Just know that I would if I could. Love you and the rest of the Craisies!

Curtsying? I prefer full-on bows, where your upper body is at a 90-degree angle to your lower body. Christine gets a pass, though. For now.

What fun! Thanks, PCN. You are the new glue that holds us together. My first Bouchercon and it was wonderful … thanks to all of you and all of the Craisies I have yet to meet. Lots of love to all! Naomi, thank you for the shirt; at the risk of bodily harm I must admit that I am beginning to embrace my inner Lucy, so get used to it.

I think you’re all wonderful! I love the shirts {go, Naomi!!}. What’s next ~ engraved baseball bats? I wish I’d been there but I’ll content myself with enjoying your exploits from afar {and making sure I read another Crais book in the next week or two}.

Paulette—If I’m the glue, then everyone is in trouble. I’m so glad you made it to B’con! Heck, I’m glad *I* made it to B’con.

Shell—I would LOVE engraved baseball bats. I can already think of a hundred uses for it. Which book are you thinking of reading next?

Deb—There must be lots of NY Craisies! Give a shout if you’re one, of if you know someone who is. Deb wants to meet you!

Christine—I’ll keep sending love until you cry “uncle.”

I would love for you to come up. Bouchercon will be in Long Beach, CA, in 2014. How difficult would it be for you to get there? You have three years to plan. Do it! Tu primo will probably be there.

Wonderful photos! What a great time y’all must have had. I was grinning like a fool hearing about all the Craisie fun. I hope I can join another CraisieCon at some point because it’s such an excellent group.

(I was already grinning but the “kiddie balls” sent me right over into chortling! Thanks for the laughs.:)
