Review: THE PROPOSAL

The poster is unexceptional and the trailer is generic so I had no grand expectations going into The Proposal. Anytime you see a studio romantic comedy, you pretty much know what you’re going to get: boy and girl hate each other until something happens that changes their feelings and there’s a last-minute rush to the airport to declare their love.

That’s all here, but this movie is enormously elevated by the impeccable comic timing of Sandra Bullock, still one of the most charming actresses around, even when her character is supposed to be a nightmare. She makes physical comedy look easy, including a nude mishap that I wish hadn’t been spoiled in the trailer because it’s horrifyingly funny.

Bullock’s character, Margaret Tate, is a high-powered New York City book editor who’s about to be deported to her native Canada so she blackmails her long-suffering assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), into a fake engagement. The couple then fly to Alaska to break the news to his family. They bicker until the Alaskan atmosphere ironically starts to thaw her ice-queen demeanor, they begin to see each other in a different light and…well, you know the rest.

more proposalBut what you may not know is that the movie also veers into some wonderfully odd territory, like a dog-snatching eagle and an Alaska resident who inexplicably seems to have every job in town. Extra credit must be given to Oscar Nunez, normally seen as the quietly frustrated accountant on The Office, who is a revelation (literally) in this movie. He did some brave things that made me cringe and gape at the same time. Reynolds, whom I usually find to be frat-boy bland, raises his game here to keep up with Bullock.

Director Anne Fletcher directs with a light touch, encouraging uninhibited behavior from her actors. Everyone seemed to have a good time making this movie and that sense of fun should spill over onto audiences as well.

Nerd verdict: An engaging Proposal

    I, too, was in low-expectation mode when I saw The Proposal and was pleasantly surprised. I figured it would be a meandering piece of fluff that ultimately would leave me wondering why I had wasted my time with it, like 27 Dresses or Made of Honor.

    It was well-directed and acted (Bullock makes Reynolds charming). And Oscar Nunez was hilarious. So was the eternally funny Betty White.

    I really enjoyed it. I laughed out loud quite a bit and it stayed with me.

    Oscar Nunez and Sandra Bullock ought to do a movie as a couple! That would be awesome! And maybe Luis Guzman could play his brother. I would pay money to see that one!

      That would be one hilarious movie, EireGo! Throw in Ricky Gervais and I’m already busting a gut.

    Well, I hadn’t even put this on the Maybe list, so I’m glad I saw your Thumbs Ups, PCN and Reader#9. {And hubby is rather fond of Sandra B, so he’ll be happy!}

    Haven’t seen it. I actually don’t know if it has arrived in Mexico or hasn’t, but I’ll certainly will check it out today!

    I’ll definitely see it. ‘Though I often find Bullock as an actress I would rather see in my TV (and laughing my brains out confortably at home!), I sometimes find it irresistible to go and see her at the movies. I just love her (and the fact that she’s hot definitely helps!).

    Thanks PCN for the thumbs up!

    I really enjoyed this movie, and I’m a fan of the smart and sexy Ms. Bullock (glad to see her return to the romantic comedy genre). I also agree with you re: Reynolds (who also came up in my estimation with this and the fun short stint in Wolverine). Plus, how many mid-40’s actresses could do that hysterical nude scene (and look that good in her birthday suit)? Not many. And I needed to see a good movie given that I had just taken my 13 yr. old to see the bad Revenge of the Fallen (a perfect title for a Michael Bay film, if you ask me). Thanks, PCN.

      I’m so sorry you had to sit through Revenge of the Fallen. No way am I going anywhere near that. I checked out the first one from my library and it only cost me $1 but I still wanted my money and time back afterwards.

      I absolutely agree that Bullock was very impressive in that hilarious nude scene, both with her comedic timing and buff body.
